The Warning
Forged Steel By Eric J. Richards

On March 12,1928, at 12:57 AM the Saint Francis Dam, in San Francisquito Canyon, 35 miles east of this monument, burst creating a monstrous wall of water that swept down the Santa Clara Valley to the Pacific. The flood raged for more than four hours, taking with it 1200 homes, 10 bridges, incalculable personal belongings and more than 450 lives.

Two motorcycle officers risked their lives to awaken the slumbering community of Santa Paula to the imminent deluge. Riding for hours into the face of the oncoming torrent, the brave actions of these two individuals and others like them saved hundreds of lives.
